SOCIO-ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS AND PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF RICE PRODUCING FARMERS AT JHENAIDAH DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH

The main purpose of this study was to analyze socio-economic characteristics and profitability of rice producing farmers in Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh. This study was based on primary data which were collected from 112 rice producing farmers. The survey has been conducted in 2016 on the 2014-15 production years. The results showed that most of the farmers in the study area have primary level education and take loan for agricultural production. Per bigha total variable cost of production for Aus, Aman and Boro rice was tk. 7712.402, tk. 7255.15 and tk. 9514.643, respectively. Per bigha revenue for Aus, Aman and Boro rice was tk. 10315.63, tk. 13514.29 and tk. 20006.25, respectively. According to the definition, per bigha gross profit margin for Aus, Aman and Boro rice was tk. 2603.223, tk. 6259.134 and tk. 10487.61, respectively. So rice production was profitable in the study area. The profit level of Boro rice production was higher than the Aus and Aman rice.
