ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING ONLINE: A STUDY AT THE HIGHER SECONDARY LEVEL OF EDUCATION IN BANGLADESH
COVID-19 pandemic compelled the language teachers as well as the
students of Bangladesh to be acquainted with the virtual world of teaching and
learning. As a result, English language teachers started teaching English
online. The present mixed-method study tried to find out the perception and
preparation of the higher secondary level English language teachers for English
language teaching online and depict the prevailing situation of this new trend
of teaching. The study also explored the effectiveness of language teaching
online as well as the challenges that the teachers were facing while conducting
language classes online. The study conducted questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews
with 10 teachers teaching English language online at the higher secondary level
of educational institutions in Dhaka city and data was collected between the
period of May, 2020 to August,2020. The study found that the teachers were
trying to overcome the challenges in language teaching online and to make their
teaching effective. Moreover, to date, no guidelines for the higher secondary level English teachers
from the government or from any other educational authorities on how to do
online video interactive teaching had been given. So the teachers were
autonomous learner on online teaching.
